Box Score Denver, Colo.: The Regis men's basketball team snapped their five-game losing streak with a 67-61 win over Western State.
Regis (5-12, 2-10 RMAC), playing with just seven healthy bodies, trailed for most of the first half. Senior Mike MacKelvie kept the Rangers in the game early on as he scored 9-of-the-first-11 points to begin the game. Western State (1-15, 1-11 RMAC) took the lead on a three pointer by Jordan Adams at 21-20 with 10:57 left in the first half. The Mountaineers led the rest of the way and went into the halftime break with a 34-29 lead.
The Rangers came out of halftime and scored seven straight points to take a 36-34 lead. The two teams battled back and forth for most of the second half with neither team leading by more than three points. RU led 49-48 after an Adams three cut into the lead at the 7:05 mark.
The Rangers responded with a 9-2 run to take their largest lead of the night, 58-50, with 4:28 remaining in regulation. However, the Moutaineers would not go quitely as they were able to scratch back and took the lead at 61-60 with just 23 seconds remaining in the game, capping an 11-2 run by the visitors.
MacKelvie again saved the day as he made a driving layup and was fouled, subsequently making the free throw and stretching the lead to 63-61 with 18 seconds remaining. WSCU had another chance to tie or take the lead but a turnover and four free throws in a row by senior Jarrett Green put the game away. Two of Green's foul shots came after a technical foul was given to Western State Head Coach Mike Moskowitz following the turnover.
MacKelvie put in a career-best 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting. He also paced the team with eight rebounds, helping the Rangers outrebound WSCU 37-30. Kevin Marshall had 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Corbin Green chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Jarrett Green and Jon Conley each had seven points with Conley collecting seven rebounds. Jarrett Green also grabbed five boards and had two steals and two assists.
Regis will host Colorado Mesa on Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m.
