Box Score Denver, Colorado - The Regis University volleyball team had their chances in an upset bid of No. 10 Colorado Mines but the Orediggers proved why they are ranked so high with a 3-1 win over the Rangers.
Colorado Mines (18-2, 11-1 RMAC) took set one 25-23 before Regis (14-6, 9-3 RMAC) responded in the second set. CSM led 24-23 following an attack error by Caitie Breaux but a kill by Maggie Steward knotted the score at 24. CSM got another gift on a service error by Alessandra Orlandini before a kill by Rebecca Sponcil and Morgan put RU ahead 26-25. CSM called timeout but it didn't work as Megan Peterson hit into an attack error and gave Regis the 27-25 win.
The Ragners trailed for most of the third set but made it interesting late and trailed just 23-22 following an attack error by Alanna Winfield. Winfield came back with a kill and RU hit into a block to finish off set three 25-22.
"We played well enough against two of the toughest teams we have played all year, says Head Coach Frank Lavrisha. "Since we play these two teams next week we need to learn from this weekend."
RU had a 22-19 and 23-20 lead in set four before four straight points by CSM gave the Orediggers the slim 24-23 lead. Breaux tied the set on a kill but a service error and a kill by Sarah Pekarek put the Orediggers over the edge at 26-24.
Breaux notched 22 more kills and had seven digs and four block assists. Steward chipped in with 14, while Mary Schroeder and Gina Morgan had 13 and nine respectively. Maya Kirkeby had 20 digs, while Orlandini had 11 and Steward 10.
Rebecca Sponcil dished out 57 assists, two service aces and eight digs, while also putting down five kills in just seven attempts.
Regis will head on the road next weekend to take on the same two teams they played this weekend.
