Denver, Colorado - The Regis University volleyball team finished the gauntlet portion of their schedule but unfortunately fell for the fourth straight match this time 3-2 to crosstown rival Metro State.
Regis (14-8, 9-5 RMAC) out-hit the No. 21 ranked Roadrunners .319 to .288. The Rangers had 75 kills to just 55 for MSUD (19-3, 13-1 RMAC). Metro State had 12.5 blocks compared to just five for the Rangers.
Metro State won the first set 25-23 in a set that saw six tied scores and two lead changes. The Rangers started rolling in sets two and three. RU hit .310 in the second set and an amazing .667 in set three. The Rangers had 18 kills and no errors in 27 attempts in set three as RU won 25-16 and 25-14.
Metro State led for most of the fourth set and finished off Regis 25-20. Metro State fell behind 1-0 after a Maggie Steward kill but scored the next two points and went on to win the deciding set 15-12 and stay in the hunt for the RMAC Championship.
Samantha Mangseth had a breakout match with a career-high 15 kills on just 21 attempts and two errors for a .619 attack percentage. Caitie Breaux topped the Rangers with 19 kills and was second on the team with 13 digs, tying Alessandra Orlandini.
Steward chipped in with 17 kills, while Gina Morgan had 13 and three blocks to pace the Rangers. Maya Kirkeby had a game-high 22 digs, while Rebecca Sponcil topped all players with 60 assists. The Rangers hurt themselves with a season-high 15 service errors and just three service aces.
Regis returns home for the final four regular season matches of the season as they host UCCS on Tueday at 7:00 p.m.
