Box Score Denver, Colorado - The Regis University volleyball squad had an up-and-down night but had enough in the fifth set to hold off Colorado Christian 3-2. With the win, the Rangers secured the No. 4 seed in the RMAC Tournament that begins in 10 days.
The Rangers (16-8, 11-5 RMAC) hit .342 in the first set and never trailed in the set and won 25-18. Colorado Christian (16-11, 8-8 RMAC) pulled to within 19-16 on an Ali Weber service ace but Regis got three kills from Caitie Breaux down the stretch to pull away.
RU jumped out to a 4-0 lead but after that it was all CCU. The Cougars went on an 11-3 run and rode the strong right arm of All-RMAC performer Taylor Sturms as she reeled off nine kills in the set with no errors on 16 attempts. The Rangers had no answer and fell 25-15.
Sturms again was a bugaboo for RU as she had eight more kills on just 20 swings with two errors in the third set. A kill by Gina Morgan brought Regis to within 19-18 but three more kills from Sturms was too much as CCU took set four 25-20.
Regis led for much of the set until the Cougars scratched their way back in the game and tied the set at 15. A kill by Maggie Steward, Breaux and Morgan with a service ace by Drew Rhamy put Regis ahead 19-15 and forced CCU Head Coach Verlyn Rosenthal to take a timeout. It didn't help as Rhamy put another service ace on the board immediately following the timeout. The Rangers continued to sideout CCU and won set four 25-20.
The Rangers really put it on the Cougars in set five as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead and held off the Cougars and walked away with the win 15-9.
CCU actually out-hit the Rangers .236 to .235. RU had 70 kills to 56 for CCU with Sturms getting 21 of their 56 (37.5 percent). The Ranger defense also outplayed the Cougars as they got 84 digs to just 68 for the visitors.
Breaux led the way with 19 kills and moved into 17th place with 1,092 kills. She also was a force on defense with 15 digs and two blocks. Maggie Steward put down 17 kills and also had 12 digs. Gina Morgan also had another great night with 16 kills and a .353 attack percentage. Morgan and Samantha Mangseth led the Rangers with four block assists each.
