Rangers Give Regis Head Coach Frank Lavrisha Win No. 599 with 3-0 Win Over Black Hills State

Box Score

Denver, Colorado - The Regis University women's volleyball team started a little slow but found their rhythm and gave Regis Head Coach Frank Lavrisha his 599th career win with a straight set victory over Black Hills State.

Regis (17-8, 12-5 RMAC) tied the score at nine on a service error by Meghan Sipe but two straight kills and a bad set put Black Hills State (10-17, 7-10 RMAC) ahead 12-9 and then had leads of 13-10 and 14-11 before Regis started chipping away.  Caitie Breaux, who had a game-high 18 kills, had two in a row to knot the score at 16.  Samantha Mangseth then got a kill to put RU ahead 17-16 and force BHSU into a timeout.

Maggie Steward capped a 4-0 run for RU on back-to-back kills to give Regis a 22-18 lead.  BHSU bounced back and trailed by just two but RU put it away with a kill from senior Gina Morgan.

The second set was tied at 10 apiece following a Breaux service error before they went on a run to put away the Yellow Jackets.  RU reeled off four in a row and then with the score 16-13 in favor of the Rangers, they strung together seven in a row to lead 23-13 and cruise to the 25-14 win.

The Rangers led for much of the third set before Black Hills State took a 15-14 lead on a service ace.  RU responded everytime the Yellow Jackets took a lead and scored four in a row after BHSU led 16-15, with three of the points coming off attack errors by the visitors with one block by Mangseth.

The Rangers continued to sideout the Yellow Jackets and the final point came from the arm of Breaux for a kill for the 25-19 victory.

RU limited BHSU to just .068 hitting while hitting .295 themselves.  The Rangers limited one of the top blocking teams in the conference to just six total blocks.

Breaux was trailed in kills by Steward and Mary Schroeder's nine kills apiece.  Morgan and Mangseth each chipped in with seven.  Mangseth did her damage on just eight attacks for a .875 attack percentage.

Jaclyn Williamson saw her first action since September 21st and was an immediate factor with 20 assists and ranked second with 12 digs.  Rebecca Sponcil also dished out 20 assists in the two-setter system that seemed to work well for Regis.

Maya Kirkeby nearly had a double-double with 19 digs and eight assists.  Morgan and Mangseth each had three total blocks.

Regis will have one more regular season match when Chadron State comes calling Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m.
