Box Score Colorado Springs, Colo.: Sophomore forward Kaycee Hert (Spokane, Washington) knocked down two-late game free throws to help the Regis University Ranger women's basketball team defeat the No. 14 UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (8-2, 3-1 RMAC). The Rangers earned their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win on the road closing out a 92-89 result moving them to an overall record of 5-2 and 1-2 in the RMAC.
The Mountain Lions won the tip but it was Regis that started strong with a 9-4 run before hitting a two-minute scoreless span. Back-to-back jump shots by junior guard Bay'lee Purdy (Agate, Colorado) gave the Rangers the lead with much of the first half to play, 13-11.
Throughout the remaining minutes of the first half both teams exchanged baskets and took turns controlling the lead. Junior guard Jessica Ramos (Thornton, Colorado) drained a three-point basket just before halftime to bring the Rangers within six at the break, 50-44.
The second half proved to be a battle for Regis. Working hard to tie the score at 60-60 junior guard Caresse Williams (Citrus Heights, California) hit a three-point basket at the 15:54 mark before the Mountain Lions would respond extending their lead to as much as eight.
Never giving up the fight, the Rangers continued to chisel away at the score finally tying it at 85-85 with four minutes remaining. From this point on Regis controlled the lead and secured the victory.
Four RU starters reached double-digits tonight with Hert leading the charge at 23 points while pulling down a game-high of nine rebounds and stepping to the line 16 times and knocking down 13 of them. Williams added 18 points going 6-9 from the field, 1-1 from distance, and 5-6 from the line. Purdy threw in 12 points and sophomore forward Karlyn Johnson (Littleton, Colorado) tallied 11. Senior guard Erica Von Stein (Trafalgar, Indiana) dished out a game-high six assists.
The Rangers slightly out-rebounded the Mountain Lions 35-33 and forced 15 turnovers. Regis shot 48% from the field and 31% from the arc while going to the line 39 times and converted 31 of them for an 80% finish on the night.
RU is back on their home court on Friday, December 19 at 5 p.m. as they host Chadron State (1-7, 1-3 RMAC).
