Denver, Colorado- After a close game last night, the Regis Men's basketball took Black Hills State to double overtime. Unfortunately, the late game dramatics did not go in the favor of the Rangers and the Yellow Jackets escape the Regis Fieldhouse with an 80-78 win.
With 10.6 seconds Black Hills State controlled the ball inbounding in from their own half of the court. The Rangers applied decent pressure before Myles Henry drove down the center of the lane and banked home the winning shot.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets relied on their shooting to control the game knocking down six three pointers. Despite Black Hills State hot shooting from beyond the arc, the Rangers were able to maintain a manageable deficit. They even went up one with 1:30 in the half before Myles Henry sank a three to close out the half up 29-27.
To start off the second half the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to six after two free throws from Riley Ryan with fifteen minutes to go. Just like the previous night's game the Rangers were able to battle back and eventually took the a 48-45 lead off a Dexter Sienko layup with just over eight minutes to go.
Each team went on their own runs for the rest of the half and ended regulation tied up at 63. The first overtime was much of the same with neither team being able to create a sizable lead. It looked as though the game might extend to a third overtime before Henry was able to seal the win on his lay up.
Sienko finished with a game high 20 points along with 10 rebounds to have back-to-back double-double games. Kevin Marshall contributed 14 points and seven assists. Roberto Reyes had another solid night putting up 13 points.
The Rangers head into the winter break with a record of 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the RMAC. They will return to Regis Fiedlhouse hoping to bounce back against Western New Mexico on January 2nd. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
