Box Score 2 Stephenville, Texas: The Ranger baseball team dropped to 0-4 on the early season with 6-3 and 5-0 losses to Tarleton State.
The Rangers were able to scratch out only three hits in the first game on Sunday. Dylan Navarro had two of the Rangers hits while Ty Overboe had the other one. Brad Thoutt came on in relief of Stephen Heyliger in the third inning and shutdown Tarleton State (5-1) over the final four innings. He allowed just two hits and struckout five to keep Regis close.
Tarleton State got out early in the nightcap by scoring two in the first inning off 2013 RMAC Freshman of the Year Kirby Schwein. The Texans scored three more in the fifth inning before the RU bats were awakened. Mike Potter singled to centerfield and then stole second. Tony Schicktanz, who went 3-for-4, doubled and drove in the Rangers first run.
The Rangers got even closer in the eighth with two runs. With two outs, Overboe walked and then Tony Piazza moved him to second with a single. Potter singled to right field to plate Overboe. Schicktanz again came through with a single up the middle to score Piazza and cut the lead to 5-3. Tarleton State brought in Ethan Lenz from the bullpen who got Jesse Porras to fly out to left field.
Lenz set down the Rangers in order in the ninth inning to shut out the series with the 5-3 win.
Potter was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in a run while Schicktanz drove in two. Schwein was saddled with the loss going six innings and giving up six runs and nine hits. Jake Long and Matt Hemphill each threw one inning allowing no hits with Hemphill striking out all three batters he faced.
The Rangers will return home to face Adams State in a three-game non-conference series that begins on Saturday.
