Box Score 2 Lakewood, Colo.: The Ranger baseball team took two today from Colorado Christian by scores of 6-5 and 5-1. The nightcap saw RU starter Austin Deal throw a three-hit gem, including five strikeouts.
RU (6-9, 3-5 RMAC) scored two in the second inning when Logan Knox doubled in Ty Overboe and then John Tosches traded places with Knox with another double to drive in Knox. RU scored one more each in the fourth and fifth including a solo bomb from Tony Schicktanz, his first of the season.
Colorado Christian (4-11, 3-5 RMAC) tied the score at four following two runs in the seventh. Tony Piazza led off the eighth with a single and then stole second. A strikeout and a fly out put Piazza at third. Schicktanz again came through with a single to left to score Piazza. Tosches then singled up the middle to put runners at first and second with two outs.
John Mulhern singled to left field to plate Tosches to put Regis ahead 6-4. Steve Heyliger came on to spell starter Kirby Schwein in the ninth. He putched a no-hit ninth for his first save of the season.
Piazza went 3-for-4, while Schicktanz, Tosches and Mulhern each went 2-for-4. Schicktanz led the team with two RBIs. Schwein evened his record at 2-2 allowing just one earned run, with eight hits allowed and striking out two.
Deal was the man in game two giving up an early run in the third but settled in and set down 12 of the final 13 batters he faced. Deal struck out five with three walks and just the three hits. RU scored three in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth.
All but one RU hitter had a hit with Jesse Porras, Jon Shoutta and Piazza each going 2-for-4. Overboe drove in two for the Ranger offense.
The two teams will play two more on Saturday at All-Star Park.
