Rangers Finish Weekend at Highlands with a 15-14 Extra Innings Victory; Game Two Cancelled Due to Weather

Box Score

LAS VEGAS, N.M.:  Bad weather and storms rolling in the Rangers headed out to New Mexico Highlands looking to get some good softball in before weather hit.  As the temperature continuously dropped the Rangers battled with the Cowgirls for eight innings before RU drove in the winning run and held the opposition in the bottom of the frame for 15-14 win.

Regis snagged the first run in the third and three in the fourth for the advantage until Highlands snagged two runs in the third and seven in the fourth for the 9-4 advantage.  Regis would go on to knock four in the fifth and four in the sixth while NMHU only put up one in the fifth for a 12-10 score in the Rangers favor.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Cowgirls tied things up by driving in two runs before Regis put a stop to the scoring.  The Rangers went on to put three in during the eighth inning and held the Cowgrils to only two runs for the big RMAC victory.

This win puts the Rangers at 5-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and 6-11 so far on the season.

Freshman Carlie Sexton put in a huge performance at the plate going 5-5 and driving in three runs while scoring once herself.

Including Sexton's five, the Rangers put up 20 hits on the day.  Sophomore Nicole Hull drove in three runs while going 3-4 on the day.  She had one homerun, one double and crossed the plate three times.

Four other Rangers had two hits while four others added another hit each to the stat sheet.  Senior Sam Talmich hit her second homerun of the season and knocked in two runs while going 2-6.

Senior Shelby Wieman and juniors Taylor Wilcox and Brianna Bogdajewicz each had two hits on the day.

Junior Sydney Gaffin was good for three innings of work, allowing five hits and six runs, one of which was earned.  She struck out one in 19 batters faced.

Junior Britney Lee went in next for four innings, allowing eight hits and seven earned runs while striking out three in 22 batters faced.  She will get the win, now going 2-7 on the current season.

Sophomore Rachelle Knudson completed her second save of the 2014 season after one inning pitched.  She allowed two hits and only one run in five batters.

The second game was cancelled due to weather, but the Rangers will return home next weekend to take on the Eagles of Chadron State on Saturday, Mar. 8 and Sunday, Mar. 9.  The first doubleheader will start at 12 and 2 p.m.
