Box Score 2 DENVER, Colo.: Regis baseball started off the weekend with two losses to Colorado State University at Pueblo, losing 6-4 in game one and 3-0 in game two. The losses put the Rangers at 8-11 overall and 5-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Game one started off with the ThunderWolves going up three runs in the first inning. They crossed three more in the fifth to go up 6-0 over RU.
The Rangers answered in the bottom of the fifth frame with one run of their own after sophomores Ty Overboe and Dylan Navarro reached on singles to the outfield. With Overboe on third, freshman Justin Hawkins sent a grounder to second base to score the run and break the egg for the home team.
It was not until the ninth inning that the Rangers went on another three-run rally to attempt to send the game to extra innings.
RU started the bottom of the inning going down two outs, but Navarro changed the pace when he singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He scored on a big single up the middle by Hawkins.
Senior Jesse Porras then lined a single through to right center, putting Ranger runners at first and third.
With runners in scoring position, freshman Mike Potter laced one to left field scoring both runners as he rounded the bases attempting to garner a triple. A huge relay by the ThunderWolves caught Potter out at third in an extremely close call made by the field umpire, finalizing the game at a 6-4 win for the visiting team.
Navarro and senior Tony Piazza both went 2-4 in the game while Potter and Hawkins both snagged two RBIs. Porras, Hawkins, Overboe, senior John Tosches and junior Logan Knox all were good for one hit as well.
Sophomore Kirby Schwein grabbed his third loss, now 2-3 on the season, after going for five innings of work. He allowed 10 hits and six earned runs while fanning one in 24 batters faced. Freshman Nick DiPaola (shown in picture) stepped in to finish things up for the last four innings, allowing only one hit and no runs while sitting down one batter.
Game two was a different story, as Pueblo's southpaw Jesse Bristow pitched a four-hitter while fanning six Rangers throughout the game.
Pueblo plated two runs in the third and one in the fourth to take the advantage once again. The Rangers had a few opportunities to score throughout, but could not manage to send anyone completely around the bases.
Potter, Overboe, senior Tony Schicktanz and junior Tyler Kesthely all had singles in the game.
Sophomore Austin Deal and senior Kevin Ross split time on the bump in the seven-inning matchup, with Deal (1-2) getting his second loss of the season. Deal allowed only three hits while striking out one in 3.2 innings of work. Of the three runs scored, only one was earned while he pitched. Ross fanned two and allowed only two hits in his 3.1 innings of work against 12 total batters.
