Box Score Denver, Colo.: The Regis University baseball team was playing from behind all game and it caught up to them as they fell to Metro State in the first game of a four-game set 11-4.
Regis (10-12, 7-8 RMAC) starter Kirby Schwein (2-4) left the game one batter into the eighth inning with the score tied at four and a runner on first. He gave up 11 hits and five earned runs while strkining two. Metro State (6-14, 4-11 RMAC) got the scoring going early by putting up two in the top of the first inning.
RU responded with two in the bottom half when Logan Knox doubled to plate Tony Piazza and then the next batter, Ty Overboe, doubled in Knox. Metro scored one more in the third before Regis came back in the fourth with two runs. Mike Potter started it off with a single that scored Justin Hawkins and then the very next batter, Knox, singled to plate Dylan Navarro.
Metro State then scored one in the fifth to tie the game at four. Neither team scored till MSUD put up two runs in the eighth inning and five more in the ninth to open up the game and take game one 11-4.
Navarro and Hawkins were both 2-for-4 at the plate, while Potter and Knox both went 2-for-5 with Knox leading the way with two RBIs. Hawkins also swiped two bases. Kevin Ross, Steve Heyliger, Jordan Blaylock, and Matt Hemphill all saw action on the mound.
The two teams will play two more on Saturday with first pitch set for 12:00 PM.
