Box Score Denver, Colo.: Freshman Brad Thoutt put the Regis baseball team on his shoulders and led them to a 6-1 win over Metro State to earn a split in the four-game series. Thoutt struck out a career-best 12 batters in the complete game gem.
Regis (12-13, 9-9 RMAC) scored three in the second inning. The first coming on a single by Ty Overboe that drove in Tony Schicktanz. Jesse Porras scored what would be the winning run on a balk by Metro State (7-16, 5-13 RMAC) Derek Stimpson before a wild pitch by Stimpson scored Ty Overboe.
Thoutt had a shutout going through the first six innings before Gavin Purvis blasted a homerun to centerfield on the first pitch he saw to leadoff the seventh. Thoutt settled down the rest of the way and since 2006 it is the most strikeouts for a freshman at Regis.
RU tacked another three runs on in the fifth when Tony Schicktanz tripled to drive in Tony Piazza and then with two outs, Overboe came to the plate and hit a no-doubter to left center.
Schicktanz went 3-for-4 at the plate in the final game and in the final three games of the series was 8-for-10. Overboe went 2-for-4 while driving in three runs and scoring two himself. Leadoff man Dylan Navarro went 2-for-5 at the dish.
Thoutt scattered six hits and allowed just one walk and improved to 3-1 on the season.
Regis heads to the road next weekend as they travel to Las Vegas, N.M. to take on New Mexico Highlands starting Friday.
