Lee Fans Eight in 7-2 Win over Black Hills, Rangers Sweet YellowJackets in Day One

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DENVER, Colo.:  It was a hot day for the Rangers, both at the plate and in the field.  With temperatures hitting 80 degrees for the first time this spring season, Regis hit the field looking to keep the heat going with a pair of wins.  They did just that, taking game one 7-2 and game two 5-4 to kick off senior weekend with a bang.

In game one, junior right-hander Britney Lee fanned eight and allowed on one earned run out of the two runs BHSU scored to earn her sixth win of the season.  In 31 batters faced, she gave up six innings while going a full seven innings solo.

To help their pitcher offensively, the Rangers put up seven hits in the game with freshman Carlie Sexton leading the sticks with four RBIs after going 2-4 with a double.

Senior Keala Bertulfo, juniors Rachel Illias and Taylor Wilcox, sophomore Ashley Prescott and freshman Bradey King all also added a hit to the stat sheet with Illias garnering an RBI as well.

The game was quiet until the third inning when Regis started things off with a few walks.  Both juniors Brianna Bogdajewicz and Illias reached on a walk and freshman King reached after being hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Sexton took that opportunity to rip a double to the left center fence, clearing the bases and giving the Rangers the 3-0 lead.  The inning was not over however as junior Wilcox stepped up with a single through the right side and advanced to second on a throw from right field that caught Sexton out at home.

Wilcox reached home soon after on an error by the right fielder on a hard to handle ball by freshman Alyssa Finger.  The inning ended with the Rangers up 4-0 and continued in the fourth inning.

To start things in the bottom of the next frame, Bogdajewicz started by reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman.  Illias then doubled down the left field line to score her and crossed the plate herself when Sexton reached on a throwing error by the second baseman.

As the Rangers had given up a run in the top of the frame and again in the top of the sixth, the score now stood 6-2 in the Rangers' favor.  In the bottom of the sixth, King singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  She scored on another single up the middle by Sexton to close out the game with a 7-2 win.

The second game was just as eventful for the Rangers with Regis putting up another seven hits throughout the seven inning game.

Regis scored first in the third inning yet again.  To start, King walked and advanced to second on a groundout to the pitcher before stealing third.  With two outs, Finger sent another hard to handle ball to the shortstop that resulted in King crossing home.

Senior SamTalmich then singled through the left side to move her over and senior Shelby Wieman placed a nice single out in left field to score her.  With the bases loaded, the YellowJackets put the Rangers down to keep the score at 2-0 in the home team's favor.

BHSU gained the lead in the top of the fourth inning on a huge three-run homerun by pitcher Savanah Eckhardt but the Rangers were quick to snag the lead in the bottom of the frame.

Illias started off the bottom of the inning with hard single up the middle and King reached on a throwing error by the pitcher that put her on second and Illias on third.  Sexton then sent yet another double to left field to score them both.  Later in the inning, Talmich singled through the left side to pick up an RBI and put the Rangers up 5-3.

In the top of the next inning, Black Hills earned another run but the Rangers were successful in putting them under and keeping the rest of the game in their favor.

Junior Sydney Gaffin and sophomore Nicole Hull both saw time on the mound.  Gaffin earned the win after striking out two and allowing only four hits while Hull garnered her first save of the season after closing out the final 2.2 innings, allowing only two hits, giving up no runs and striking out two.

In the second game, Sexton went 2-4 again with two RBIs and two doubles.  Talmich put in a 2-4 performance with one RBI and Wieman earned an RBI with her single.  Illias and King also put up singles for the Rangers.

On the day, Sexton hit .500 after going 4-8 with six RBIs, three doubles and a .875 slugging percentage.  Talmich, King and Illias all had two hits to help the Rangers.

The series against Black Hills will continue tomorrow, April 12 with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Seniors Shelby Wieman, Sam Talmich and Keala Bertulfo will be honored in between the games.
