Box Score 2 DENVER, Colo.: It was the last home series for the Rangers 2014 season, and Regis put in a huge effort on all counts, honoring the seniors with a complete four-game sweep over Black Hills State University. They defeated the YellowJackets 7-5 in game one and 4-2 in game two.
After the two-game win yesterday, Regis knew they had to come out with a bang to keep the momentum going forward.
Game one was quiet until the opposition scored one run in the fourth inning. Regis was not having that however, as in the bottom of that very frame the Rangers put up a big three-run output.
The Ranger offensive started with a single through the right side by freshman Alyssa Finger. Then with two outs on the board, senior Shelby Wieman tripled to right field and advanced home on a throwing error by the right fielder to put the Rangers up 2-1. Sophomore Nicole Hull closed out the inning with a solo shot over the right field fence to put Regis up 3-1
BHSU took the lead again in the fifth, but Regis countered with four more big runs in the bottom of the inning to overtake the advantage.
Freshman Carlie Sexton reached first on a fielder's choice ball and advanced to third on a throwing error by the shortstop that found junior Taylor Wilcox safe at first. Finger then tripled to score both Sexton and Wilcox and give the Rangers a huge advantage.
Senior Keala Bertulfo then reached first on a fielding error by the third baseman and Wieman walked to load the bases. Hull grabbed another RBI with a single up the middle to finish the inning with Regis up 7-5.
Black Hills put up a rally run in the top of the seventh, but were unable to do any more than that as the Rangers closed out the game with the 7-5 win.
Hull started the game, striking out five and allowing seven hits in her 4.2 innings pitched. Sophomore Rachelle Knudson picked up the win after tossing 2.1 innings, fanning one and allowing only two hits during that time.
Game two was just as eventful for both sides offensively with the Rangers crossing one run in the first inning to start things off.
Junior Rachel Illias started things off with a single to center field and freshman Bradey King kept things going after reaching on a bunt single. Wilcox put another fielder's choice ball that found King out at second but left the corners occupied, allowing herself to steal second and draw the throw allowing Illias to steal home on the YellowJackets.
Regis put up another run in the second after Finger led off with a double to left center and was brought in by a hot single to left field by Wieman.
With the score 2-0, Regis went until the fifth inning before scoring again. Senior Sam Talmich led with a single through the left side and busted it to second on a hard hit ball by Hull, allowing both Rangers to be safe on the base path after the fielder's choice hit.
Sexton then walked to load the bases and Illias sent a hot ball towards second base that BHSU could not handle, resulting in both Talmich and Hull scoring.
Black Hills put up two runs in the sixth inning in an attempt to edge towards the win, but Regis held them off earning the 4-2 win on the day and the full four-game sweep on the weekend.
Junior Britney Lee had another outstanding game in the circle, striking out three and allowing only two hits after seven complete innings of work.
Regis Athletics would again like to thank the three Regis seniors that have put in countless hard hours and effort throughout the 2014 season and their entire careers.
Next weekend, Regis will head to Colorado Christian to take on the Cougars on Friday and Saturday, April 18 and 19. The doubleheader will start at 12 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.
