Wild Doubleheader as Regis Splits with Adams State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Alamosa, Colo.: "Wild" was the word of the day in the Regis and Adams State baseball doubleheader.  The Rangers took the first game in 11 innings and Adams State scored 24 runs in game two for the split.

The two teams combined for 28 runs, 32 hits and seven errors in game one as Regis (13-18, 10-14 RMAC) won in 11 innings 15-13.  The two teams entered the ninth inning tied at seven before Regis scored one run in the top.  Tony Piazza came to the plate with two outs in the inning and hit a fly ball to centerfield that was deep enough to score Dylan Navarro from third.

However, Adams State scratched out a run in the bottom of the ninth when Kyle Sedlak singled to right field to send the game into extras.  Regis erupted for five runs in the top of the 10th on three hits and a Adams State (12-23, 10-15 RMAC) error.  ASU did not go quietly in the bottom, scoring five of their own to again tie the score, this time at 13.

Mike Potter hit a sacrifice fly to score Tony Schicktanz and then Justin Hawkins singled to centerfield to drive in Ty Overboe and put RU ahead 15-13.  Matt Hemphill gave up two singles in the 11th but a game-ending 63 double play got him out of the jam and gave the Ranges a much needed victory.

Potter collected three hits in five at bats and also drove in three runs.  Hawkins also drove in three runs and joined Overboe, Schicktanz and Navarro with two hits apiece.  Piazza and Navarro each drove in two runs.  Hemphill went 1 1/3 innings giving up just two hits and allowing no runs.

Regis started game two out well by scoring two runs in the top of the first when Tony Piazza doubled in Jesse Porras and Logan Knox singled in Piazza.  However, ASU put across eight runs in the bottom half of the first to blow open the game.

ASU scored two runs each in the second and third, while putting seven more across in the fourth and five in the fifth to take game two 24-7.

Knox went 3-for-4 while Porras and Jon Shoutta hit back-to-back homeruns in the fifth and each collected two hits.  Piazza also had two hits, while Shoutta and John Tosches led RU with two RBIs apiece.

The two teams will finish a doubleheader tomorrow with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
