#6 Colorado Mesa Erupts in Twin Bill Sweep of Rangers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denver, Colo.: The sixth-ranked Colorado Mesa Mavericks Erupted for 40 runs and took the first two of a four-game series with the Rangers 19-6 and 21-9.

The Rangers kept the potent Colorado Mesa (33-8, 27-5) attack at bay early in the first game but a 12-run eighth inning proved too much as CMU won 19-6.  CMU scored four in the second and led 7-0 before the Rangers came to bat in the fourth.  Tony Piazza reached on an error and then Logan Knox doubled to left field.  Jon Shoutta came up and hit a single to right center that plated both Piazza and Knox.  CMU's Matt Delay then put down the next three batters to end the threat.

Shoutta again cut into the lead in the sixth inning when he hit a towering homerun to left field to drive in Knox and make the score 7-4.  The Rangers put two on the board in the bottom of the eighth.

Shoutta went 3-for-5 with four RBIs while Russell Picconi came on in the ninth and had a perfect inning including one strikeout.

The second game seemed like a deja vu when CMU went for 11 in the second inning and never looked back.  Regis (15-24, 12-20 RMAC) connected for 14 hits and nine runs in the game including taking a early lead when they scored three in the bottom of the first inning.

Tony Piazza went 3-for-4 at the plate and was a single shy of hitting for the cycle.  He drove in three runs as did Logan Knox who was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while Jon Shoutta had another good game going 2-for-4.

The Rangers were hurt by four errors which led to 13 of the Colorado Mesa runs being unearned.

The same two teams will finish off the series with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
