Box Score 2 Denver, Colo.: The Regis University baseball team trailed by four runs entering the final inning of the nightcap with #6 Colorado Mesa before scoring five and Tony Piazza was the hero with a walk-off single to cap off the comeback. The Rangers were defeated in game one in a high-scoring affair, 16-11.
Regis, (16-25, 13-21) who was officially eliminated from playoff contention, trailed 6-2 heading into the sixth inning of the second game. John Tosches led the inning off by earning a trip to first due to a catcher's interference. He later scored on a double by Ty Overboe, who later on would have a hand in the comeback. A sacrifice bunt by Justin Hawkins scored John Mulhern and then a wild pitch plated Overboe to cut the Colorado Mesa (34-9, 28-6) lead to 6-5.
The Mavericks scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-5 lead. Logan Knox led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and that was followed by a single from Tony Schicktanz through the left side. Two batters later, with one out, Knox scored on a wild pitch to start the rally. Mulhern then walked to set put two runners on base before Overboe tied the game with a towering homerun to left field that sent the dugout into a frenzy and tie the game at nine apiece.
Justin Hawkins hit a ball into the hole that the shortstop got but couldn't get it to first before Hawkins touched the bag. Jesse Porras doubled down the left field line to move Hawkins to third. Jon Shoutta, who hit .533 on the weekend, then was intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a potential double play situation and consequently the final play.
Due to the fact that there was only one out, CMU was forced to play their infield in and Piazza, who hit .556 on the weekend, put a ball on the ground between the shortstop and third baseman to supply the winning run.
Piazza went 3-for-5, while Overboe drove in a team-best four runs and went 2-for-3 as did Shoutta. Knox and Jesse Porras each connected on two hits. Matt Hemphill improved to 3-1 this season earning the victory in one inning of work.
The Ranger bats were hot during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader as they pounded out 17 hits in the 16-11 loss. RU led 3-1 after three innings and then with the score tied at three going into the fifth, the Mavericks put a four spot on the board.
Regis responed with four runs of their own highlighted by a three-run double by Overboe. The top of the sixth inning was the clincher for CMU as they put five across the plate and then three more in the seventh to lead 15-7. RU chipped away at the lead by scoring two runs each in the eighth and ninth but it wasn't enough as CMU held on 16-11.
Porras went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Piazza and Overboe were each 3-for-5 with Overboe driving in four more runs to give him eight on the day. Schicktanz and Tosches each connected on two hits, while Shoutta drove in two runs and had a team-best two walks. Austin Deal and Steve Heyliger came out of the bullpen and allowed just one run over the final two innings to keep the Rangers in the game.
RU will finish the season next weekend as they host Colorado Christian on Friday and Saturday.
