Box Score 2 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado: Regis softball started their last regular home season off to quite a bang again the Mountain Lions of UC-Colorado Springs. The Rangers took game one with a shocking 21-4 advantage in five innings against the then-RMAC ranked #2 team, before winning game two 7-6 in seven.
It was a hitter's free-for-all in game one on Saturday, with the Rangers collecting 13 hits against UCCS hosts while allowing only four hits to the Mountain Lions.
UCCS actually took the first advantage after crossing two runs in the first inning, but that was quick to change as the Rangers knocked in eight runs in the top of the next frame to take over a commanding lead.
In the second, the Rangers had two outs but continued to take advantage of the Mountain Lions battery and defense. Senior Keala Bertulfo reached on a fielder's choice and moved over jon a single up the middle by sophomore Nicole Hull.
They both moved on a passed ball before senior Shelby Wieman reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, grabbing two RBIs to start the Rangers' scoring output. Junior Brianna Bogdajewicz kept things going by beating out a single to the shortstop and fellow junior Rachel Illias knocked out a huge three-run dinger past the center field fence to put the Ranger up 5-2.
The inning was far from over as freshman Bradey King followed the homer with a walk and freshman Carlie Sexton singled to first base to mover her to third before stealing second herself. Then junior Taylor Wilcox finished out the Ranger scoring with another Ranger three-run homerun to left field, putting the Rangers at 8-2 in the second.
The scoring continued with two runs in the third, eight more in the fourth and three more to finish out the fifth for a 21-4 victory.
Throughout the rest of the game, Sexton and Wilcox went 3-5 with the freshman collecting six RBIs, a homerun and two runs and the junior seeing four RBIs off two homeruns and three runs. Illias went 2-3 with five RBIs off a homerun, one walk and grabbing four runs in the game. Wieman owned three RBIs on the day also and five other Rangers had solo hits in the game.
Hull (6-5) picked up the win after allowing four hits and four runs, three of which were earned and two strikeouts in 25 batters faced.
Game two was a bit more evenly squared with the Rangers winning 7-6 in seven complete innings.
UCCS scored first again with one run in the third. Regis answered with two runs in the fourth to gain the lead, starting with back-to-back solo homeruns by Wilcox and senior Keala Bertulfo.
The Mountain Lions put two up in the bottom of the frame to go up 3-2 and snagged one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to own a 6-2 lead.
The Rangers were not going to end the day without another big win however, putting up five runs in the seventh before closing out the home team to own the 7-6 victory.
In the top of the seventh, Hull started the inning off with a solo homerun to right center. She was followed with a ground-rule double by senior Sam Talmich and a sacrifice fly by King to start the runs coming.
Sexton then reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and two hit by pitches to find the bases loaded and another run scored. Wieman then singled to the shortstop to grab another RBI and Hull singled to the pitcher to pick up an RBI of her own.
Juniors Britney Lee and Sydney Gaffin both commanded the mound with Gaffin (5-6) snagging the win. Lee went strong for five innings with four earned runs off five hits and six big strikeouts while Gaffin allowed only three hits and two earned runs while fanning two.
The Rangers continued the series today, April 27 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
