Box Score Silver City, New Mexico: The Regis volleyball team finished the weekend 2-1 and capped it off with a 3-0 sweep of Western New Mexico. RU won by scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-22 to improve to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the RMAC.
The Regis defense again shined limiting Western New Mexico (4-6, 1-2 RMAC) to a .073 hitting percentage and averaged nearly 4.0 blocks per set. RU took a 6-6 tie in the first set and went on a 14-4 run to take a 20-10 lead and cruise to the 25-16 win.
Regis led 19-10 in set two before the home team made a strong comeback. They went on a 10-4 run to cut the score to 23-20. An assisted block by Caitie Breaux and Cedar Bellows gave RU a 24-20 lead before Breaux ended the set with a service ace.
An attack error by Breaux put the score at 19 apiece late in the third set. RU got kills from Breaux, Mary Schroeder and Samantha Mangseth to give them some space and they held on for the 25-22 win.
Breaux again led the way with 14 kills, while also digging out nine Mustang attacks. Gina Morgan continued her strong play hitting .409 with 11 kills in just 22 attempts with just two errors. Maggie Steward and Schroeder had nine and eight kills respectively.
Rebecca Sponcil dished out 39 assists and had 10 digs. Maya Kirkeby had another outstanding defensive effort with 21 digs, while Steward had 15 digs. Mangseth led the Rangers at the net with two solo blocks and two assisted blocks.
RU will only have three days to prepare for yet another three-day weekend. On Thursday, the Rangers will host CSU-Pueblo at 7:00 p.m.
