Box Score 2 Canyon, Texas: The season got underway for the Regis University volleyball team at the West Texas A&M Classic. The Rangers opened their season with a convincing 3-0 victory over Truman State but finished off the day with a tough 3-2 loss to Texas Woman's.
The Rangers (1-1) exacted some revenge by defeating Truman State, who beat the Rangers last season, with a 25-16, 25-20, 25-21 victory. The Rangers hit at a .283 clip, while RU limited TSU to just a .089 attack percentage.
Maggie Steward led the Ranger offense with 12 kills while digging out eight attacks. Gina Morgan put down eight kills and hit .412, while Samantha Mangseth had seven kills in just nine attacks with no errors. She hit .778 in her first game in a Ranger uniform while also gathering two blocks at the net.
Caitie Breaux also put down seven kills, while Mary Schroeder and Rebecca Sponcil had six and five kills apiece. Sponcil led the way with 33 assists while also getting six digs. Preseason RMAC Defensive Player of the Year Maya Kirkeby led the defense with 24 digs, while Breaux and Alessandra Orlandini each tallied 12.
RU fell behind in match two by losing the first two sets 25-22 and 25-19. The Rangers responded with a 25-20 win and a 25-17 victory in set four. The Rangers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fifth set and also led 4-2 before Texas Woman's closed the game on a 13-6 run to win 15-10.
Breaux led the offense with 17 kills, while Mary Schroeder put down 13. Morgan supplied nine kills, while Steward and Mangseth chipped in with seven apiece. Kirkeby had a game-high 28 digs and seven assists, while Sponcil assisted on 43 kills and dug out 23 attacks of her own.
The Rangers had 10 service aces including four by Breaux, who also had 16 digs, with Orlandini grabbing 11 digs.
The Rangers will play two more games on Saturday in the tournament.
