Box Score Lakewood, Colo.: The Regis University Ranger women's basketball team dropped road loss number two to the Colorado Christian Cougars (5-10, 5-4 RMAC) this weekend in league play. The Rangers were looking to bounce back from a loss previously to Colorado School of Mines but fell 67-63 to the Cougars.
Both teams exchanged baskets in the opening minutes of the game but it was Regis who held the lead the majority of the first half until Colorado Christian went on a 13-2 run in the final minutes before the break to take their first lead since early in the game. The Cougars shot six free throws in a minute span and a three-point basket sent Colorado Christian into halftime with a 33-30 lead over the Rangers.
The opening minutes of the second half proved the same as the first half; each team taking turns at scoring. Sophomore forward Karlyn Johnson (Littleton, Colorado) tied the score 42-42 with 13:42 to play. The score would tie one final time at 44-44 off a made layup from junior guard Caresse Williams (Citrus Heights, California) with half of the second half to play.
The Cougars lived from the charity stripe as the game came to an end with eight of their final points coming from free throws. Junior guard Bay'lee Purdy (Agate, Colorado) put in RU's last five points but it was not enough to lift the Rangers over the host team falling to a 8-5 overall record and 4-5 in the conference.
RU was slightly outrebounded 36-33 but committed 19 turnovers that allowed the Cougars to score 25 points off. Shooting an impressive 49% from the field and 30% from distance the Rangers were much better than Colorado Christian. Only one Ranger reached double-digits, Purdy led all scorers with 18 points from 7-14 from field. Senior guard Erica Von Stein (Trafalgar, Indiana) and junior guard Jessica Ramos (Thornton, Colorado) each added nine points shooting 5-14 from distance collectively.
The Rangers are back on their home court Friday, January 16 against Fort Lewis at 5 p.m.
