Two Wins in a Row for the Rangers, Cruise Past Adams State

Box Score

Denver, Colo.: Back-to-back Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wins for the Regis University Ranger women's basketball team as they sailed past the Adams State Grizzlies (2-13, 2-9 RMAC) 76-53.  RU's momentum continued from last night's as they move to 10-5 overall and 6-5 in the RMAC.

An aggressive and scrappy Adams State team applied pressure throughout the game but the Rangers handled it well.  Regis held the Grizzlies to just three points until the 13:48 mark when ASU finally scored their second field goal of the game.  The Rangers then fell in a slump for the next five minutes allowing the Grizzlies to come within five, 17-12, with just under ten to play before the break.

A jumper by sophomore forward Karlyn Johnson (Littleton, Colorado) extended the lead back to double-digits but Adams State fought back once again to come with five at the 3:31 mark but the Rangers responded and headed into halftime with a 36-27 lead.

The Grizzlies continued with the pressure and would come within two at the 14:50 mark, 44-42.  From this point forward, the Rangers extended the lead one final time to double-digits where it would stay for the remainder of the game.  Regis reached their largest lead of the game at 23 with 4:21 to play and 23 would be the lead at the final buzzer as well.

The Rangers scored 28 points in the paint and went 25-58 from the field for a 43 percent total.  Junior guard Bay'lee Purdy (Agate, Colorado) led all scorers with 14.  Johnson added 13 off 4-6 from the field and 5-6 from the line.  Junior guard Caresse Williams (Citrus Heights, California) went 9-12 from the charity stripe for 11 total points and dished out three assists.  Impressive defense once again held the Grizzlies to shoot just 28 percent from the field and 27 percent from distance.

Regis is on the road at Western State on Friday, January 23 at 5:30 p.m.
