Rangers Breeze Past Western State, 76-51

Gunnison, Colo.:  In the first game of a four-game road stint the Regis University Ranger women's basketball breeze by the Western State Mountaineers (4-12, 3-9 RMAC).  The Rangers move to an 11-5 overall record and 7-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after a 76-51 result over the Mountaineers.

Regis made over half the shots they attempted finishing with a 51.8 field goal percentage led by junior guard Bay'lee Purdy (Agate, Colorado) dropping 13 off 4-10 from the field and 3-8 from distance.  Western State was the first on the board and held their only lead of the game early at the 16:21 minute mark by one, but it was not long before the Rangers found momentum going on a 12-2 run.  RU would continue to grow their lead throughout the remainder of the first half heading into halftime with control over the Mountaineers, 41-22.

The second half picked up right where the first left off.  The Rangers held Western State at a comfortable distance leading by as much as 34 with eleven minutes remaining. 

Scoring for Regis was spread throughout the team with just two players reaching double-digits.  Sophomore forward Karlyn Johnson (Littleton, Colorado) added ten points and five rebounds going 5-6 from the field.  Junior guard Caresse Williams (Citrus Heights, California) led the Rangers in rebounds pulling down ten on the night, three offensive and seven defensive, and chipping in eight points.

RU converted 13 points from forcing 19 turnovers and tallied 20 assists with help from Williams with six and senior guard Erica Von Stein (Trafalgar, Indiana) with five.  The Mountaineers won the battle on the boards, 37-35. 

Regis travels to Colorado Mesa (13-3, 10-2 RMAC) Saturday, January 24.  Mesa currently sits at second in the RMAC one game behind UC-Colorado Springs.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
