Box Score Gunnison, Colorado - The Ranger men's basketball team used a 22-of-28 performance at the free throw line to defeat Western State 76-67. The win gave Head Coach Lonnie Porter his 34th win in the series, a series that will come to an end for Coach Porter due to his retirement at the end of the season.
Regis (5-11, 3-9 RMAC) never trailed in the game and allowed Western State (3-13, 2-10 RMAC) to tie the game just two times early in the game. With the score tied at seven with just under 16 minutes left in the first half, RU went on a 9-2 run spurred by Kevin Marshall's four points. Marshall had a season-high 21 points for Regis going 11-for-12 at the free throw line.
Regis extended their lead to 10 in the first half on five different occassions including a three-point basket from Bryan Siefker just before the halftime buzzer to give RU a 36-26 lead. The Rangers continued to increase their lead in the second half and led by as many as 16 points, a few different times.
Western State did cut the lead to eight with just over two minutes left in the game and kept the pressure on Regis but the Rangers responded by going 13-for-14 at the charity stripe to close out the 76-67 victory.
The Rangers shot 52.1 percent from the field including going 21-for-37 (56.8 percent) from two-point range. Regis was a lot better than the Mountaineers on the boards out-rebounding them 42-27.
Marshall went 5-for-8 from the field and led the team with four assists and pulled down a season-best seven rebounds. Brett Hartshorne had a very efficient game going 4-for-5 from the field and making all five free throws to splash in 14 points.
Dexter Sienko had another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He led the Rangers with three blocks as well. Siefker came off the bench to supply 10 points, going 2-for-3 from deep.
Regis will travel to Grand Juncdtion on Saturday to take on the resurgent Colorado Mesa Mavericks.
