Box Score

SPEARFISH, S.D. - In their second game in as many days, the Regis University volleyball team (10-7, 7-1 RMAC) dominated the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets (6-11, 3-6 RMAC) taking three straight sets from the home team Saturday night.

In the first set, the Rangers and Yellow Jackets found themselves tied on many different occasions. With the score tied at 11, Regis made their first big run of the set rattling off four straight points to give them a 15-11 lead that forced a BHSU timeout. The Rangers never let off the gas as they pushed the lead to 20-12 forcing another Yellow Jackets timeout. Junior Maggie Steward led all Rangers with seven kills and an impressive .500 hitting percentage in the first set, while freshman Brinley Beresford connected with her teammates amassing 10 assists in the 25-14 first set win.

Set two resulted in much of the same. Regis and Black Hills State exchanged points back and forth for the majority of the set. Trailing 12-9, junior Katie Klein sparked a Ranger comeback with a monster kill as she received a pass from senior Rebecca Sponcil. Klein would continue to pummel the Yellow Jackets as she tallied four kills in the set. Freshman Kristen Hornung chipped in with three kills in the set including the set winner, giving the Rangers a 2-0 set lead heading into the third set.

Klein brought out the hammer as she earned four kills in the first seven points of the third set, giving the Rangers a 5-2 lead early. BHSU would not get within three points of Regis for the remainder of the third set. Steward (3) and Klein (8) combined for 11 kills in the 25-21 third set victory. Klein finished the match with 15 kills and a .393 hitting percentage, with Steward compiling 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .171. Beresford earned 29 assists on the night to go along with four digs, two blocks and a kill. Sponcil played great defense as she notched 26 digs in the match, giving her 288 on the season.

The volleyball team will return home to face Chadron State on Tuesday, October 13 at 5:30 p.m. followed by a match against Colorado Christian Friday, October 16 at 5 p.m. The Rangers will wrap up their three game home stand as they host Colorado Mines Saturday, October 17 at 5 p.m.
