Regis ties MSU-Denver 1-1

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. – Regis University (6-3-2, 2-2-2 RMAC) traveled to Metro State University Denver (5-3-3, 2-2-3 RMAC) on Sunday afternoon and came away with a 1-1 tie.

MSU Denver jumped out to an early lead as Korena Perales took a shot from outside the box on the right side of the field beating junior Kat Crump for the first goal of the game. Regis earned three corner kicks in the first half but was unable to convert any of the opportunities into goals.

RU spent the majority of the second half searching for a chance to score the equalizer. Senior Sid Otto created opportunities deep in Roadrunner territory but her attacks were spoiled by the MSU Denver defenders. Sophomore Mickie Piechowski also saw her share of openings on offense but failed to capitalize.

Trailing 1-0 with 23 seconds left in the second half Regis was awarded a free kick 40 yards out. Junior Maison O'Neill stepped up and delivered a beautiful cross into the middle of the box where sophomore Maggie Saras was waiting to blast it past the keeper with her head, tying the game at one.  Saras' second goal of the season could not have come in a more clutch moment as the Rangers and Roadrunners would take the game into overtime.

In overtime, both teams traded shots as a shot from Otto was saved in the box, followed by a shot wide right from Roadrunners Noemy Polanco. Neither team would find the back of the net in the two 10 minute overtime periods ending the game in a 1-1 tie. The Rangers outshot the Roadrunners 16-15 and put eight shots on goal. Kat Crump (5-0-2) remains unbeaten on the season making five saves in the match with 15 shots faced in the match.

The women's team will return home to host Colorado Mesa on Friday, October 16 at 1 p.m. in a rematch of the 1-1 tie earlier this season. The Rangers will then look to take a conference match win from Westminster College Griffins on Sunday, October 18 at noon on the Regis Match Pitch.
