UCCS blank Rangers in 1-0 victory

Box Score

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Regis University (4-6, 3-5 RMAC) dropped a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup to UC-Colorado Springs (8-3, 6-1 RMAC) 1-0 Sunday afternoon.

Battling throughout the first half, neither team could put themselves in the driver's seat as both teams were unable to find the back of goal. Regis managed to take three shots in the half, putting two of them on target while UC-Colorado Springs also put two shots on goal. The RU backline caught the Mountain Lions offside on three separate occasions in the first half.

The Rangers could not convert on their two corner kick opportunities in the first half while the defense shut down any chances for UCCS on their corner kicks on the other end of the field.

Five minutes into the second half, the Mountain Lions mounted an attack that ended with a cross from J.R. Calhoun finding Josh Berntsson for a header goal giving UC-Colorado Springs a 1-0 lead early in the second half.

The Regis offense turned up the pressure looking to find the equalizing goal but could not find the answer. Sophomore Sawyer Lincoln saw many of his chances foiled by the Mountain Lions goalkeeper and the retreating defenders as he led RU with three shots in the match.

Peter Vogrin, goalkeeper for UCCS, bested senior Christian Nicolosi's effort saving all five Ranger shots on goal as Nicolosi saved four of the five Cougar shots on goal. Regis finished the game with three corner kicks, conceding five to their opponents. RU was outshot 16-12 in the 1-0 loss.

The men's soccer team will return home to host cross-town rival MSU-Denver on Friday October 16 at 3:30 p.m. in a rematch of the 1-0 loss earlier this season. Regis will also host a rematch of today's game against UC-Colorado Springs Sunday, October 18 at 2:30 p.m on the Regis Match Pitch.
