Rangers tie CMU for second time this season

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team (6-3-3, 2-2-3 RMAC) hosted a rematch against the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (1-9-4, 1-6-3 RMAC) Friday afternoon and after 110 minutes neither team came out victorious as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The first half did not amount to much for either tem as each side fought hard but could not put anything together on the offensive end. The defensive effort put forth by both teams in the first half was brilliant. Regis was held to one shot in the first half, while CMU took five.

The second half proved to be much more eventful than the first. The Rangers got things started as sophomore Akina Fujimoto took a pass from fellow sophomore Mickie Piechowski and scored the first goal of the game in the 48th minute.

A few possessions later, RU countered a Maverick attack that saw Piechowski collect her second assist of the game as she delivered a ball into the box where redshirt-sophomore Sade Akindele was waiting to drill a header into the corner of the net putting the Rangers up 2-0 in the 51st minute.

Fortunes turned for Regis as a wonderful save from junior Kat Crump careened off the post and rolled to the feet of CMU's Allie Davis who put the Mavericks on the board, 2-1 in the 81st minute of the game. Colorado Mesa's pressure on offense lead to another goal from Davis who took a pass from Halie Bergeron to knot the game at two with only six minutes left in regulation. Neither of the teams managed to score before the horn sounded for the end of the second half.

Moving into the overtime period, RU looked to push the tempo and create havoc among the Maverick defense. However, defenses from both sides stepped up their presence and did not concede a single shot to the other team in overtime. The Rangers earned three corner kicks in the game while they only gave up two to CMU. Colorado outshot Regis 14-11, and put eight shots on target. Kat Crump collected six saves on the day, and remains unbeaten on the season with a record of 5-0-3.

The women's soccer team will continue their home stand as they welcome Westminster College to the Regis Match Pitch on Sunday October 18 at noon. The Rangers will then host cross-town rival Metro State University-Denver on Wednesday October 21 at 3:30 p.m.
