Regis drops non-conference match to MSU-Denver

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University men's soccer team (4-7, 3-4 RMAC) lost to cross-town rival Metro State University-Denver (9-3-1 6-2 RMAC) Friday afternoon.

The first half saw a lot of action as both teams aggressively sent men forward to attack the opposing defense. Redshirt-sophomore Eduardo Belmar subbed into the game and made an immediate impact as he took a cross from freshman Ryan Ebert on the left flank and headed his shot past the keeper for the first goal of the game in the 33rd minute.

MSU-Denver would answer the goal from Belmar eight minutes later as RU was called for a foul in the box resulting in a Roadrunner penalty kick. Josh Belfrage of Metro State University-Denver stepped in and tied the game at one heading into halftime.

Coming out of halftime the Rangers continued to press on for the equalizer, attacking from each side of the field and creating great opportunities. In the 67th minute MSU-Denver's Danny Arrubla took a pass from Jaydon Moreschini and carried it up the left wing where he found space and netted the Roadrunners second goal of the game gibing them a 2-1 lead.

An intercepted pass by Tyler Trujillo turned into MSU-Denver's third goal as Trujillo sent in a cross from 30 yards out that reached Belfrage who scored his second goal of the game and increased the Roadrunner lead 3-1 in the 76th minute.

RU was outshot 21-9 on the day, as MSU-Denver put 12 shots on target. Senior goalkeeper Christian Nicolosi saved nine shots in the game while facing 21. The Roadrunners also found the advantage in the corner kick battle taking eight to the Rangers three.

The men's soccer team will look to rebound as they host UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday October 18 at 2:30 p.m. followed by a matchup against South Dakota School of Mines at 1 p.m. on Wednesday October 21 on the Regis Match Pitch.
