UCCS escapes with 2-1 win against RU

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University men's soccer team (4-8, 3-5 RMAC) battled a UC-Colorado Springs team (10-3, 6-1 RMAC) but fell short on Sunday afternoon dropping the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match 2-1 to the Mountain Lions.

Regis fought hard against a strong UC-Colorado Springs team that took advantage of opportunistic rebounds. Senior Christian Nicolosi made a one on one save that careened off the goal post where Josh Berntsson of UCCS was waiting to put the Mountain Lions up 1-0 in the 22nd minute.

With a sour taste in their mouths, Regis responded with a brilliant attack of their own. Freshman Ben Parsons weaved in between UCCS defenders and was able to send a bouncing pass to the right flank where sophomore Sawyer Lincoln sent his volleyed shot into the back of the net tying the game at one in the 32nd minute of the first half.

Eleven minutes later, RU was called for a foul in the box that gave UC-Colorado Springs an opportunity to take the lead heading into halftime. Blake Barnes sent the penalty shot straight into the goal post but Zach Egeler of UCCS followed the shot and netted his third goal of the season giving the Mountain Lions a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.

Both teams stepped up the defense as neither team was able to score in the second half. UC-Colorado Springs narrowly outshot the Rangers 14-12 on the afternoon as the corner kick battle was deadlocked at five. Nicolosi made four saves in the match, while his counterpart Peter Vogrin saved three shots.

The men's team will host their last home game of the season this week as they welcome South Dakota School of Mines to the Regis Match Pitch. The game will also be Senior Day for the Rangers as they honor the seniors on the team that will be graduating in the spring. The match will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday October 21.
