Rangers lose 2-1 against Colorado Mines

Box Score

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team (3-4, 2-3 RMAC) lost their second game of the season to Colorado Mines (7-0-1, 5-0 RMAC) by a score of 2-1.

Looking to avenge their overtime loss to Colorado Mines earlier this season, the Rangers traveled to Golden, Colorado to take on the Orediggers. The first 35 minutes of the first half produced many shots with no goals from either team.

In the 36th minute, midfielder Nikolaus Grotz of CSM sent in a cross from a corner kick that found the head of forward John Haist for the first goal of the game. With Colorado Mines up 1-0, they continued to press as the half came to a close. With minutes left in the first half, Haist found the net again for his seventh goal of the season, putting the Orediggers up 2-0 heading into halftime.

Coming out of halftime needing to get something started, sophomore Eduardo Belmar scored his third goal of the season after he received a pass from fellow sophomore Brian Strasbaugh, putting the Rangers on the board and cutting the deficit back to one.

Unfortunately for RU that was all they could find by way of goals. The Orediggers outshot the Rangers 24-11 with Regis putting two shots on goal. The Rangers took six corner kicks in the game, one more than CSM but were unable to convert on any of the set pieces. Senior Christian Nicolosi made four saves in the game facing 24 shots.

The men's soccer team will return home to face Colorado Christian University on Sunday, October 4 at 1 p.m. on the Regis Match Pitch.
