Rangers beat MSU-Denver 2-1 on cold, slippery afternoon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team won their eighth game of the season as they beat Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe, and cross-town rival, Metro State University- Denver 2-1 on a cold and slippery Wednesday afternoon.

The two teams were evenly matched through 25 minutes of play. Trading shots, attacks, and defensive stops at each end of the field. In the 26th minute sophomore Mickie Piechowski continued her streak of great playmaking and crisp passing as she sent a grounded cross through the box to fellow sophomore Maggie Saras who netted her third goal of the season giving Regis the 1-0 lead.

Minutes later on another offensive attack, the Rangers earned a corner kick from a deflected shot. Redshirt-senior Nicholette Sartori delivered a perfect cross into the box finding the head of junior Maison O'Neill for her third goal of the season, putting the Rangers up 2-0 in the 42nd minute.

The action started to dwindle as players had a hard time gaining any traction on the rain-soaked pitch. Many passes skidded away from attackers and defenders leaving little room for error on either side of the ball. MSU-Denver had an opportunity fall to their feet in the 67th minute as Korena Perales intercepted a pass and sent Reigna Banks through to goal. Banks beat junior Kat Crump one on one bringing the RU lead to just one with 23 minutes remaining in the match.

The Rangers tightened up their defense and limited the Roadrunners from any threatening attacks for the rest of the match. Regis was outshot by MSU-Denver 17-15 but dominated the corner kick battle 6-1, converting on one set piece that proved to be the game winner.

The women's soccer team will go on the road to face Fort Lewis on Friday October 23 at 3 p.m. followed by a trip to Adams State University on Sunday October 25 to matchup with the Grizzlies at 1 p.m. All away games can be streamed online by clicking the stretch internet tab at regisrangers.com
