Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team snapped their four game losing streak as freshman Ben Parsons netted the game winner in the second overtime period giving Regis the 2-1 victory over South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on a chilly Wednesday afternoon.
The first half got off to a very quick start for the Rangers as senior Kade Hanson sent a ball down the right side of the field allowing redshirt-sophomore Brian Strasbaugh to weave his way through the Hardrocker defense, cutting across the endline, putting a shot on frame that was saved and deflected by the SDSM&T goalkeeper. The ball rolled out to the trailing junior Jake Gilchrist-Dudley who put the ball into the back of the net giving RU the 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the game.
Regis carried the 1-0 lead into halftime but the Hardrockers created a scoring opportunity immediately off the second half kick-off. A deflected ball headed towards senior Christian Nicolosi was intercepted and headed into the goal by SDSM&T's Lars Skau, knotting the game at one in the 46th minute.
Through two periods Regis outshot the Hardrockers 20-8. Despite the shot difference no victor could be decided and the teams headed into overtime. RU did not give up a shot to South Dakota Mines in either period of overtime, and early in the second period of overtime freshman Quinton Carey pushed the ball up the field where he found fellow freshman Ben Parsons on the right side of the box who drilled the game winning golden goal past the Hardrocker goalkeeper, giving the Rangers the 2-1 win. In the winning effort, RU outshot the opposition 24-8 while also dominating corner kick's 11-1.
This marked the Rangers final home game of the season as they will finish out the regular season on the road traveling to Colorado State University-Pueblo on Sunday October 25 at 1 p.m. followed by a match against Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah on Friday October 30 at 4 p.m. RU will conclude their 2015 regular season when they travel to Colorado Mesa to face the Mavericks on Sunday Novermber 1 at 2:30 pm.
