Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team (9-3-3, 4-2-3 RMAC) grinded out a 1-0 victory over the conference leading, and nationally ranked, #18 Fort Lewis College Skyhawks (10-4-1, 8-2-0 RMAC) on Friday afternoon.
The top-ranked Skyhawks came out of the gates strong, possessing the ball for the majority of the first 12 minutes of the match. Clearance attempts by Regis continued to find the feet of FLC players who garnered possession for their team. Once the Rangers were able to collect the ball, keep possession, and begin an attack they nearly scored.
Sophomore Mickie Piechowski found herself in front of the defenders heading towards a one on one situation with the goalkeeper in the 17th minute. Piechowski's shot was tipped by the Fort Lewis keeper and the ball narrowly missed the goal sliding past the goal post.
The teams were unable to put any of their shots in the net and they headed into halftime knotted at one. Regis and Fort Lewis took an equal amount of shots at six in the first half, while the Rangers managed two shots on goal and FLC put only one on target.
RU came out in the second half and dominated the first 20 minutes of the period as they possessed the ball much like the Skyhawks did in the first half. The Ranger defense did not give any chances to the opposition catching them offside on many attempts.
The Regis offense began to find their rhythm as they were able to put passes together, connecting on combination passes and creating open space opportunities. Late in the second half the Rangers attacked the FLC defense and earned a corner kick. For the second time in as many games, redshirt-senior Nicholette Sartori sent a cross into the box finding junior Maison O'Neill for the first and only goal of the match in the 86th minute.
The play mirrored the game winning play that Sartori and O'Neill combined to create in the 2-1 victory over Metro State Unversity-Denver this past Sunday. O'Neill now has four goals on the season and Sartori picked up her fourth assist of 2015.
Kat Crump (8-0-3) has been impeccable in between the posts this season and she continued her brilliance on Friday. Crump earned her, conference leading, sixth shutout of the season making four saves in the 1-0 victory over the number one ranked team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).
The women's soccer team will remain on the road as they travel to Adams State University to face the Grizzlies on Sunday October 25 at 1 p.m. Away matches can be streamed online by clicking the stretch internet tab at www.regisrangers.com
