Regis clinches RMAC tournament berth with 3-1 win over ASU

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team (10-3-3, 5-2-2 RMAC) traveled to Adams State University (6-7-3, 3-6-1 RMAC) and came out with an important 3-1 win in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).

In the opening half, Regis was able to push the ball into the Grizzlies defensive zone, creating many scoring opportunities early and often. Early in the first half, junior Catherine Anger took a corner kick that made its way to fellow junior Maison O'Neill who then headed the ball to redshirt-junior Sade Akindele who blasted a header past the ASU keeper, giving RU the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

The Rangers were not finished pushing the pace. Two minutes later senior Sid Otto, the RMAC's leading scorer, created space from 30 yards out and drilled a laser shot that beat the keeper and put Regis up by two after 15 minutes of play.

RU carried their 2-0 lead into halftime and looked to continue limiting the Grizzlies offense from having any chance to score. ASU would cut into the lead as Dezirae Armijo took a shot from the left side of the box that trickled through the hands of junior Kat Crump, bringing the Ranger lead down to one.

Otto did what she does best and picked the team up in crunch time. With seven minutes left in the second half, Otto took a pass from redshirt-senior Nicholette Sartori and buried a shot in the back of the net, sealing the victory for the Rangers. With her two goals today, Otto now has eight goals on the season and leads the RMAC.

RU was outshot by ASU 18-11 and also took one less corner kick than the Grizzlies, 3-2. Crump (9-0-3) made eight saves in the game, extending her impressive unbeaten streak to 12 games this season. With this win, Regis has clinched a spot in the RMAC tournament at the end of the season and will look to continue their hot streak entering tournament play.

The women's soccer team will return home to host the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves on Friday, October 30 at 3 p.m. The ladies will then welcome New Mexico Highlands to the Regis Match Pitch on November 1 for their regular season finale at 1 p.m.
