Thunderwolves spoil comeback as RU loses 4-2

Box Score

PUEBLO, Colo. - The Regis University men's soccer team (5-9, 3-6 RMAC) traveled to CSU-Pueblo to face the Thunderwolves (9-7-0, 5-5 RMAC) on Sunday afternoon and were unable to earn a victory as they fell 4-2.

The first half was all Thunderwolves as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead 26 minutes into the first half. CSU-Pueblo added to their lead as CSU-Pueblo's Zach Davis netted the third Thunderwolves goal minutes before the first half came to an end.

Trailing 3-0 coming out of halftime, the Rangers were looking to chip away at the lead and put themselves in position for a comeback. RU came out with fury and much needed aggression, looking to get things started. In the 50th minute freshman Ben Parsons dropped a pass back to redshirt-junior Chris Walker who blasted a shot at goal. The ball deflected off a couple CSU-Pueblo defenders and made it to the goal putting the Rangers on the board with Walker's first goal of the season.

On the ensuing possession for Regis, they drove the ball deep into Thunderwolves territory and once again put pressure on the defense. Junior Jake Gilchrist-Dudley found redshirt-sophomore Eduardo Belmar who took a shot that also deflected off a player, chipping the keeper and bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of CSU-Pueblo in the 51st minute of the second half.

With the momentum tilting towards the Rangers, the offense pushed the ball up the field looking for any space to develop an attack. Sophomore Sawyer Lincoln and freshman Ryan Ebert were able to use the left side of the field to send in crosses in hopes of finding the equalizer.

Unfortunately for the Rangers a missed opportunity led to a counter attack from the Thunderwolves. Matt Marchena of CSU-Pueblo took a left footed strike just outside of the penalty box to put the Thunderwolves back up by two goals. CSU-P outshot Regis 17-9, also dominating the corner kick count 12-4. With the win, CSU-Pueblo has clinched a position in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) tournament at the end of the season.

The men's soccer team will remain on the road as they travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to face Westminster College on October 30 at 4 p.m. followed by their final regular season match at Colorado Mesa University on November 1 at 2:30 p.m.
