Regis women's basketball falls to Newman

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team had a rough go at their first real test of 2015-16 against the visiting Newman University Jets. An even game throughout the first half, the Rangers saw a decline in production and an increase in turnovers in the second half falling to the Jets 75-53.

At the end of the first quarter, the scored tied, 11-11. Newman forced three Regis turnovers to take control of a 17-13 lead keeping RU scoreless for nearly three minutes. Three-point specialist Bay'lee Purdy did what she does best knocking down one from distance giving the lead back to the Rangers, 18-17.

Another Purdy three-pointer gave RU a 26-22 with under a minute to play in the second quarter but the Jets responded with one from distance to bring the halftime score to 26-25.

An immediate 6-0 run at the start of the third quarter put Regis on their heels and gave Newman some wiggle room. The Rangers were never able to fully recover continuing to play hard but falling victim to mental mistakes.

The Jets capitalized on 21 Regis turnovers converting 19 points. The Rangers went 19-for-48 from the field for 39.6 percent but struggled from beyond the arc going 4-for-16. RU was slightly outrebounded 35-30 but gave up 13 offensive boards.

The Rangers were led offensively by Purdy with 19. She went 3-for-9 from distance and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. Caresse Williams and Kaylie Rader each added seven.

Regis will look to bounce back Saturday, November 13 at 1 p.m. against Oklahoma Christian.
