Rangers stunned by MSU-Denver in 3-0 loss

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. -  The Regis University women's soccer team was stunned by the Metropolitan State University-Denver Roadrunners on Wednesday afternoon as they lost their first round Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match 3-0.

After locking down the No. 4 seed in the tournament, Regis was looking forward to facing a team they had recently defeated in MSU-Denver. Unfortunately, the Roadrunners did something they could not do in two previous meeting with the Rangers, defeating RU and eliminating them from RMAC Championship contention.

Midway through the first half and after dominating the game, Regis' luck turned against them. A misplayed kick from the Rangers found, the RMAC Freshman of the Year, Reigna Banks of MSU-Denver who had no problem finishing an open net opportunity in the 21st minute.

The Roadrunners took their 1-0 lead into halftime as both teams regrouped and tried to counter the strategies of the opposing team. RU put together a few opportunities that were foiled by some great saved by the MSU-Denver keeper.

In the 56th minute, the Roadrunners added to their lead as Lauren Kaufman connected on a shot from the right side of the box that tipped off junior goalkeeper Kat Crump's hands and squeaked into the side netting. Elise Boisnard of MSU-Denver put the game out of reach with the Roadrunners third and final goal of the game.

RU dominated possession for the majority of the game, also dwarfing the Roadrunners corner kick opportunities, taking nine and limiting MSU-Denver to one. The shot count tilted in favor of the Roadrunner 14-13. Senior Sid Otto and sophomore Mickie Piechowski led Regis with two shots on goal for the match.

The great 2015 campaign for the women's soccer team comes to an end on the heels of the loss to MSU-Denver. The Rangers will graduate six seniors this offseason but will return much of their core players. RU will lean on their young group of players to fill many different roles including the 2015 RMAC Player of the Year, Sid Otto.
