Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University volleyball exploded to a three-set sweep of the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets, Friday night at the Regis Fieldhouse. Aside from a battle in the second set, the Rangers breezed past the Yellow Jackets with ease improving to an overall record of 15-10 and 12-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
RU wasted no time jumping out to an 11-5 lead and forcing a Black Hills State to an immediate timeout. Continuing to stay hot in the offensive attack, Regis held the visitors to just 11 first set points and a -.057 attack percentage.
The momentum shifted in the start of the second set as the Yellow Jackets returned the favor resulting in an 11-2 lead at one point. Rebecca Sponcil served RU to six straight points, including three service aces of her own to get Regis back into the mix . The battle began as the score sat at a 16-16 tie. The score would tie four more times before the Rangers closed out the second set, 26-24, on five straight points, this time with Makinzie Kellerman at the service.
The third set was over just as quick as it started. RU burst into an offensive powerhouse hitting at a .333 clip in the third set. A run of seven halfway through with Brinley Beresford serving gave Regis the momentum for good. The Rangers held the Yellow Jackets to just nine points and a -.097 attack percentage to finish the sweep 25-9.
Three Rangers hit in double-digits led by Maggie Steward with 13. Steward saw her second best offensive night this season in a .435 attack percentage and chipped in with nine digs. Rachael McCue and Katie Klein added 11 and ten kills, respectively.
Defense at the net was even as both teams produced ten apiece, Diamond Ridley-Pierce led the charge with five. Sponcil led Regis in digs with 17 while adding four assists and four service aces.
RU is back at home Saturday, November 7 at 5 p.m. as facing South Dakota Mines on senior night. Seniors will be recognized for immediately following the match.
