Regis volleyball takes care of business on senior night

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. – On a very special night for the four graduating seniors, the Regis University volleyball took care of business defeating the visiting South Dakota Mines Lady Hardrockers 3-1. Regis improves to an overall record of 16-10 and 13-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The Rangers came out hot at the start of the first set and remained a dominate force throughout making the Lady Hardrockers earn each point. RU held Mines to just 11 points and finished off the visitors 25-11 in a quick first set.

The Lady Hardrockers gave Regis a run for their money in the second set. The Rangers took an early 5-1 lead but South Dakota Mines began battling to tie the score and eventually exchange point-for-point with the hosts. Back-to-back attack errors gave RU a 2-0 lead with the 25-22 second set victory.

With a chance to complete the sweep, the showdown in the third set electrified the crowd as both teams rallied to earn each and every point. The Rangers saw five match point opportunities but the Lady Hardrockers just would not give up earning the hard fought 30-28 third set win.

A heavy hitting Ranger offense eventually proved too much for South Dakota Mines as RU jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. The Hardrockers would come within one, 12-11, but Regis surged again holding Mines at a comfortable distance to take the fourth set, 25-17.

Maggie Steward and Rachael McCue led the night with 15 kills a piece hitting at a clip of .297 and .233. The outside hitters also each tallied two blocks. Katie Klein added 13 kills for a .235 attack percentage.

The best night defensively at the net for Regis recording 21 blocks. Brinley Beresford led the charge with five. Liz Keena and Cedar Bellows chipped in with three a piece. The Rangers also held the Lady Hardrockers to an attack percentage of .029. Rebecca Sponcil recorded 24 digs and Alessandra Orlandini had 17.

The Rangers close out the regular season on Thursday, November 12 against Colorado Mines and Saturday, November 14 at Chadron State.
