LaComb Hits Walk-Off Home Run for 12-10 Win

Box Score

Hays, Kansas- It's the type of scenario every young baseball player dreams of having the opportunity to step into. Bottom of the ninth with the game all tied up and the perfect pitch is barreling towards home plate. Regis' junior infielder Drew LaComb made the best of his opportunity Friday night sending a long drive over right-center field and seized a 12-10 win over Central Oklahoma.

The crowd in Hays was treated to an offensive battle as the two teams combined for 22 runs on 30 hits. The game was evened up at 10 in the top of the seventh when Central Oklahoma's Jacob Borrego crossed the plate. The Bronchos had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth, but left Brad McDonald stranded on second.

In the bottom of the ninth freshman outfielder John Flint actually struck out swinging, but was gifted with a wild pitch and advanced to first. After junior infielder Marco Burciaga struck out looking, LaComb stepped into the batter's box and the rest was history.

The Rangers got the scoring started in the first inning when LaComb crossed home from third base as junior catcher Ty Overboe grounded out to third. Freshman infielder Andrew Bryniarski scored in the second as LaComb flied out to center putting the Rangers up 2-0.

The Bronchos were finally able to answer in the top of the third inning with three runs, but the Rangers just punched right back scoring four more including an Overboe bomb over the center field fence; his first home run of the year. Regis was in control of the game with a 6-3 lead, but Central Oklahoma did not let that lead last long. In the top of the fourth the Bronchos put another three runs on the board to tie the game at 6-6 heading to the fifth.

In the fifth inning each team scored again to keep the game tied at 7-7 moving to the sixth. In top of the sixth, the Bronchos scored two, but that was out-done by senior infielder Logan Knox. Knox hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to put his Rangers up 10-9 before Borrego's game tying run in the seventh. Knox's home run is also is first of the year.

Knox, Overboe, LaComb, and junior Weston Byers each contributed two hits, but they were all bested by Bryniarski's three. Freshman Chris Quackenbush earned his first career win, working two and one-thirds innings surrendering zero runs and just four hits.

Early on this season, it seems like Regis' bats have been making contact with anything thrown their way. The Rangers have accumulated 31 total runs from 44 hits including four home runs.

They will need to keep their offensive streak going as they take on Fort Hays State tomorrow at noon and then Central Oklahoma again on Sunday at noon to finish the weekend.
