Box Score Alamosa, Colorado – In tonight's low-scoring Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference battle, the game was all about defense. The Regis University Ranger women's basketball team grinded out an important road victory tonight over the Adams State Grizzlies (3-20, 3-16 RMAC). Holding the largest lead of the game at 17, RU allowed the Grizzlies to fight back and stay close but ultimately wore them out, earning the 60-49 win.
The Rangers led just 13-6 after the opening ten minutes of play. Regis continued to extend their lead in the following minutes while holding Adams State to single digit scoring until the 7:22 mark, 19-10. RU held the Grizzlies to just 19 first half points to head into halftime with a 33-19 comfortable lead.
Adams State regrouped and came out of halftime on fire going on a 15-2 run in the first five minutes of the second half. Junior guard Bay'lee Purdy (Agate, Colorado) ended the scoring draught knocking down one from distance at the 14:42 minute mark, 38-33.
Three straight free throws at the 6:54 mark gave the Grizzlies their first lead of the game, 44-43. The Rangers responded immediately taking the lead off back-to-back free throws by sophomore Karlyn Johnson (Littleton, Colorado). RU went to the line and knocked down 11 free throws in the last five minutes of play to move to 15-8 overall and 11-8 in the RMAC.
Four Rangers hit double figures led by junior guard Caresse Williams (Citrus Heights, California) with 15 points. She led all scorers going 5-6 from the field, 1-2 from distance, and 4-8 from the line. Purdy and sophomore Kaycee Hert (Spokane, Washington) both added 12 with Hert posting a double-double pulling down ten boards. Johnson, back from illness, pitched in with ten points.
RU forced 22 turnovers while holding the Grizzlies to shoot just 25 percent from the field and 14 percent from the arc. The rebound count ended at an even 44-44 apiece.
The Rangers travel to Fort Lewis (14-9, 11-8 RMAC) Saturday, February 21 for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
