Box Score Alamosa, Colorado- Back in 1961, Head Coach Lonnie Porter stepped on to the Adams State court for the first time as a player before eventually came to coach at Regis. Tonight, the Rangers faced off with the Grizzles for Coach Porter's last game as a coach inside Plachy Hall Gym. Unfortunately for Regis, this did not necessarily mean the Grizzles were going to ease up by any means. Adams State took control of the game early and never looked back winning 85-52.
Looking at the stat sheet, one category jumps out for the Rangers and that was their shooting from the free throw line (22-27). Any coach would be more than pleased to see their team follow solid game play with consistency at the charity stripe. Yet, reviewing the rest of the stats, Regis' free throw line marksmanship was just about the only thing went right for them throughout the game.
In the first half the Rangers were only able to manage five total field goals while the rest of their points were earned at the free throw line. Adams State on the other hand was able to get their offense rolling early on. Mike Hemsley led the Grizzles' scoring in the first; 10 of his first 12 total points during the half came within the first 12 minutes of the game. Hemsley later capped his 12 first half points with a dunk at just under a minute remaining in the half putting his team up 36-20. The Grizzles' Michael Middlebrooks closed out the half with another dunk and Regis was down 38-20 at the break.
Starting off the second half, the Rangers came out firing from distance to try and quickly gain some ground. In the first two minutes of the second, both junior guard Dylan King and sophomore Bryan Siefker knocked down a three pointer and the Rangers cut the lead to 41-26. The Rangers would cool off just as quickly and shoot 6-16, but remained impressive at the free throw line (12-15) for the rest of the half. Hemsley again managed to lead Adams State's scoring shooting 4-4 from the field and earning four more at the free throw line for a total of 12 second half points.
King lead the Rangers in scoring for the night contributing 11 while going 3-7 from beyond the arc. Senior forward Brett Hartshorne also had double digit scoring with 10; he also three rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Freshman forward Dexter Sienko scored nine.
The Rangers will next be playing at Fort Lewis tomorrow night with tip-off set for 7:30 pm.
