Rangers Fall to Hot Shooting from UC-Colorado Springs

Box Score

Denver, Colorado – In the final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference weekend of regular season play, the Regis University Ranger women's basketball team hosted the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (22-5, 17-4 RMAC).  The Mountain Lions, currently in second in the RMAC, outlasted the Rangers 74-60.

RU jumped out to an early 3-1 lead but UCCS would quickly tie and move into control.  The Mountain Lions fast paced, run and gun style was difficult to slow down hitting four from distance in span of three minutes.  Junior guard Bay'lee Purdy (Agate, Colorado) knocked down a couple of huge three's to keep the score close, 22-15, at the 11:31 mark.

Junior guard Jessica Ramos (Thornton, Colorado) got in on the scoring action bringing the Rangers within two, 22-20, at the halfway point of the first half by draining one from deep.  The Mountain Lions again countered extending the score to ten at halftime, 37-27.

Halftime was just what RU needed to regroup, the Rangers opened the second half with a 12-2 run to tie the score 39-39 at the 16:48 mark.  Exchanging of baskets would take place for the next five minutes between squads before UCCS slowly began to pull away.

At the 10:34 mark, Regis was down just four but that would be the closest they would come throughout the remainder of the game.  The Mountain Lions visited the charity stripe 33 times and free shots in the second half is what kept RU at a distance.

Not being able to slow down the hot hand from the three-point arc as UCCS went 45.5 percent coupled with the Mountain Lions tripling the amount of times to the free throw line, ultimately caused the Rangers to fall.  RU moves to 15-10 overall and 11-10 in the RMAC and still sits in seventh place just above Metro State (13-12, 10-11 RMAC).

Purdy led Regis with 17 points, shooting 5-16 from the field and a perfect 4-4 from the line.  Senior guard Erica Von Stein (Trafalgar, Indiana) and junior guard Caresse Williams (Citrus Heights, California) each added 12 points.  As a team, RU shot 31 percent from both the field and three.

The Rangers caused 18 turnovers to convert 20 points but gave up ten offensive boards to suffer 15 second chance points.  Overall, RU was outrebounded 43-34.

Regis will honor the three seniors as they play in the final home game of their careers to close out the RMAC regular season.  Tip-off is set 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 28 against Colorado State-Pueblo (16-9, 14-7 RMAC).
