Rangers Dominate the ThunderWolves in Final Regular Season Game

Box Score

Denver, Colorado – In the final regular season game, the Regis University Ranger women's basketball team left it all out on the court easing past the Colorado State-Pueblo ThunderWolves (16-10, 14-8 RMAC) 73-61.  The Rangers knew what was on the line and transferred that to the court as they move to 16-10 overall and 12-10 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference securing the seventh seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

From the tip, Regis was flowing and hitting shots in rhythm jumping out to a six-point lead, 8-6.  The ThunderWolves tried to respond but RU was right there every time slowly extending their lead to double-digits and then some.

The impressive first half continued as the Rangers held CSU-Pueblo to just 18 points while shooting 55 percent from the field and 50 percent from distance.  Junior guard Caresse Williams (Citrus Heights, California), junior guard Bay'lee Purdy (Agate, Colorado), senior guard Erica Von Stein (Trafalgar, Indiana), and junior guard Jessica Ramos (Thornton, Colorado) all got in on the hot shooting hand from distance knocking down six combined three's to head into halftime with a 44-18 lead of the ThunderWolves.

The second half began right where the first left off, RU held CSU-Pueblo at a comfortable 20-point distance until the halfway mark.  The ThunderWolves slowly began to get some stops and work their way back into the game.  A three at the 6:52 mark by Pueblo guard Dee Arrieta brought the visitors within ten, 55-45.

The offensive pressure continued for the ThunderWolves coming within just five but Williams put an end to that draining one from deep to push the lead back to eight with five minutes remaining, 58-50.  The ThunderWolves tried one last ditch effort and applied full court pressure with two minutes to play but could never close the gap.

The CSU-Pueblo outscored the Rangers in the second half but late game free throws allowed RU to hold onto the lead at the final horn.  RU knocked down 12 free throws in the final five minutes, seven from Ramos.

Williams led Regis with 23 points on 9-16 from the field and 3-5 from distance.  Purdy and Ramos each added 15, respectively, shooting a combined 4-10 from the arc.  Forcing 20 turnovers resulted in 16 points and holding the ThunderWolves to shoot just 13 percent from the three all played into RU's domination over Pueblo.  The Rangers shot 43 percent from the field, 41 percent from the arc, and visited the line 24 times to covert 18 free points.

This concludes the regular season for Regis as they clinched a playoff spot in the RMAC tournament.  Tournament play is set to begin on Tuesday, March 3; RU's future opponent is yet to be determined.
