Box Score 2 Denver, Colorado – Bouncing back from their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference loss was the Regis University Ranger softball team sweeping the Colorado Christian Cougars in day two of the weekend to move to 14-8 overall and 10-1 in the RMAC.
In the first game, the Rangers and Cougars required nine innings but eventually Regis would get the job done taking the first game of the double-header 5-4. RU immediately was down 2-0 after two innings of play until sophomore Carlie Sexton (Littleton, Colorado) put one over the fence to score a two-run homer and even the score, 2-2.
In the top of the fifth, senior Taylor Wilcox (El Centro, California) catching behind the plate threw out the lone base runner for CCU to get Regis out of the inning. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, junior Nicole Hull (Westminster, Colorado) singled to left field to bring two across the plate and give RU the first lead of the game, 3-2.
The Cougars took back control of the lead in the top of the sixth off two solo homeruns. In the bottom of the seventh and the end of the game nearing, the Rangers needed to make something happen and doing just that was Sexton. Sophomore Bradey King (Loveland, Colorado) singled up the middle to be followed by a double from Sexton to score King and tie the score at 4-4.
Hull, on the mound for RU, held CCU to just two hits and no runs in the top of the eighth and ninth. On two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the game looking as if it was headed to the tenth, freshman Delaney McGinn (Arvada, Colorado) blasted one over the left field fence for a solo walk-off homerun and game-winner.
Junior Nicole Aviles (Phoenix, Arizona) started the game pitching for RU but Hull earned the win pitching in three innings and allowing just two hits while striking out three batters and moving to 4-4 overall.
In the second game, Hull earning yet another win on the weekend moving to an overall record of 5-4. She allowed just four hits and two runs to help the Rangers to an 8-2 win over the Cougars in the final game of the series.
With the bats swinging, the Rangers opened the last game of the series with three runs on four hits; Sexton and Hull with back-to-back doubles to score three and give RU a 3-0 lead.
CCU homered in the top of the third to close the gap on RU bringing two across the plate but sophomore Alyssa Finger (Las Vegas, Nevada) earned the RBI on a sacrifice fly that scored Wilcox and widened the lead back to 4-2.
A big bottom of the fifth secured the victory for the Rangers as they tallied four more in the run column. Once again, Sexton got things rolling opening the inning with a double. Hull followed that up with a single to score pinch runner Breana Pearsall (Fremont, California).
Two more singles from Wilcox and sophomore Ashley Prescott (Berthoud, Colorado) put runners in scoring position for freshman Melissa Heronema (Westminster, Colorado). Heronema singled to score those two. The final run of the game came from senior Brianna Bogdajeiwcz (Streamwood, Illinois) bringing Heronema around on a single to left field.
The Rangers travel to Fort Lewis on Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22. This weekend is a pod series and RU will face UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday at 12 p.m. and Fort Lewis at 2 p.m.
