Rangers Lose to N.M. Highlands to End Series 2-2

Box Score

Las Vegas, New Mexico- After back-to-back wins yesterday in a double header, the Regis Rangers could not pick up their third win of the weekend today to win the four game series against New Mexico Highlands. Instead, the Cowboys edged out the Rangers 3-2 in a 13-inning game to even up the weekend series at two wins apiece.

While both teams were able to earn themselves several hits throughout the game, they did not necessarily translate into multiple runs. Highlands' three runs were earned off of 12 hits and Regis only managed their two runs from 10 hits.

The Cowboys reached home plate first in the bottom of the third inning. Colby Wilmer strolled in from third when Nick Gonzales singled up the middle. In the top of the 6th inning senior second baseman Logan Knox homered to even up the score at one, but the Cowboys would take the lead back, 2-1, in the second half of the inning. Joe Cervantes drove a shot over the right center field fence.

In the top of the 7th inning, freshman first baseman Andrew Bryniarski reached home plate thanks to a sacrifice fly from freshman shortstop Mickey Meinhofer. The next five innings saw little action from either team offensively, but that doesn't mean Regis didn't have their opportunities. The Rangers left four on base, but none of them could get past second base.

Highlands finally took advantage in the bottom of the 13th inning. Cervantes scored his second run of the game when Jesus Caporal singled to right-center field to seal the game at 3-2 in favor of the Cowboys.

Knox, Bryniarski, and freshman Connor Rochon each registered two hits. Knox and Bryniarski scored the only two runs of the game for Regis. Junior pitcher Kirby Schwein got the start for the Rangers today and worked 10 innings, but the loss was eventually handed to freshman reliever Chris Quackenbush.

The Rangers will be on the road again Tueday, March 17th to take on Northern Colorado. Then, Regis will travel to Colorado Mines for a four-game series next weekend.
