Box Score 2 The Regis Rangers (9-13, 5-8) split with Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (8-10, 3-8) on Saturday at Jim Darden Field in Golden, CO. The Rangers took the first game of the double dip 10-4, while the Orediggers took game two, 11-5.
Dominant Ranger pitching led the way for Regis in the first game Saturday. Sophomore starting pitcher Brad Thoutt went six innings, allowing four runs, scattering eight hits and striking out five as he picked up the win for Regis. Freshman righty Noah Gotsis pitched the 7th inning in relief of Thoutt.
The Ranger offense got their runs thanks to a big first inning. The Rangers knocked out School of Mines starting pitcher AJ Valerio in the first before he was able to record an out. Junior centerfielder Wes Byers started the game off with a walk and was followed up by a single by junior Drew LaComb. Junior designated hitter Ty Overboe then stepped to the plate and sent a ball over the fence in left center for a three run jack.
That was not all for the Ranger offense however, as senior Logan Knox doubled down the left field line on the next pitch. Junior Ryan Benedict would later score Knox with an RBI single. The Rangers put up six total runs in the inning. They got right back to their scoring ways in the second inning as well. It was Benedict again in the second who had a three RBI single to right field.
The Orediggers were able to scratch across two runs in the sixth inning as Ranger outfielder Mike Potter lost a ball in the sun and the ball dropped that scored two Mines runs.
Offensively Benedict, Knox, Overboe, LaComb, and freshman catcher Christian Bitar each had two hits for the Rangers. Junior Cj McGrady, junior Dylan Navarro, freshman Zach Dedin, freshman Connor Rochon, freshman Mickey Meinhofer and Potter each had a hit for Regis who totaled 16 hits in the game.
RMAC pre-season player of the year, Nate Olinger, led Colorado School of Mines in game two of the doubleheader. Olinger got the win on the mound, going seven innings and striking out five. Olinger also helped his cause by going 3-4 with two doubles to help lead Mines offensively.
Regis got down early, as Mines was able to score four runs in the first inning off of Ranger starting pitcher Matt Heibult. Heibult took the loss for Regis as he went three and two thirds innings, while giving up seven runs on seven hits. Junior Casey Kennedy and freshman Jake Griffith threw in relief for the Rangers.
The Rangers scratched two runs across in the top of the 5th inning. The inning got started with a two out double by junior left fielder CJ McGrady. McGrady scored on an RBI single by junior right fielder Brian Sture. freshman shortstop Mickey Meinohfer then scored Sture with a hit of his own. Regis scored three runs in the seventh inning as well thanks to a pinch-hit bases clearing double by freshman John Flint.
McGrady led Regis with two hits. Flint, Sture, Meinhofer and Knox each added a hit in the loss.
Regis and Mines wrap up their four game series tomorrow at Jim Darden Field at 12pm. Regis will look to win its first RMAC series of the year.
