Box Score Denver, Colorado- The Regis Rangers (10-15, 5-10) hosted today's matchup against the Metro State University-Denver Roadrunners (10-12, 5-8) losing 11-1.
Metro state opened up the scoring in the 2nd inning with some timely hitting. Mitch Gibbons singled up the middle with two outs, scoring the runners from second and third base. Regis would put their first run on the board in the bottom half of the 2nd with a single by junior outfielder Brian Sture. Sture scored senior third baseman Logan Knox from 2nd base. By the end of the 3rd inning Metro State led Regis 4-1.
In the top of the 4th inning, back-to-back doubles by the Roadrunner's Alex Walker and Jake Thurston scoring one run for Metro State. Jeff Levett of would bring in another run with a single to right field. Regis junior pitcher Casey Kennedy would step to the mound to replace sophomore starter Nick DiPaola, getting Mitch Gibbons to ground into an inning ending double play, with the umpire calling base runner interference on the Metro State runner sliding into 2nd base.
The Roadrunners would add three more runs in the 4th inning capped off by a two-run home run to left field from Hunter Donaldson. At the end of the 6th inning, Metro extended their lead to 9-1.
Freshmen infielder Zach Dedin looked to provide a spark for the Rangers in the bottom half of the 8th inning with a pinch-hit single to left field. The Rangers would fail to bring him around. Freshmen pitcher Jake Griffith would come on in the top of the ninth, getting all three Roadrunners out. One hit in the bottom of the 9th would end the first game of the four game series.
Knox was the lone run earner for the Rangers. DiPaola was dealt his third loss of the season working just three and one quarter inning. DiPaola gave up six runs from seven hits and recorded three strikeouts.
The Rangers will host three more games with the Roadrunners this weekend. A double-header in place for tomorrow with games at 12 and 3 pm and the final game is set for Sunday at 12 pm.
